Active: The Makers Guild works with food growers and producers; artists, artisans, authors and performers; designers and manufacturers; and serves DIY hobbyists, Professionals, Organizations and Small Business owners.
We host or co-promote workshops and retreats, Fairs and Markets, exhibits and performances, and provide professional development training. We are also producing island films, beginning with Island Grown, and community focused web sites.
The Guild also conducts research projects and has managed the San Juan Islands Housing Study and has completed the San Juan Islands Makers market study (online soon). A new feasibiilty study is underway for the San Juan Islands Innovation Center.
Community collaborations include:
Food Heroes and Island Bounty with San Juan Islands Conservation District, the San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild, the Orcas Center Visual Arts Committee, Northwest Ag Business Center, and local farms and small food businesses.
One Canoe Veggie Rx collaborations with: San Juan County Health and Community Services, Orcas Food Coop, San Juan Islands Food Hub, Island Grown Farm Tours, Orcas Island Farmers Market, San Juan Island Farmers Market, island farms and farm stands.
Earth Day Orcas Month collaborating with the San Juan County Land Bank, Friends of the San Juan, Orcas Island Public Schools, with island and indigenous artists, musicians, poets and presenters.
Eye of the Whale arts and nature gathering collaborating with Alchemy Arts, Island Verse, Wonder of Songwriters, and individual artists, performers and makers.
Wonder Camp educational activities for youth in collaboration with local artists, makers, musicians, storytellers, schools and youth programs.
Winter Artisans Market with a pop-up on Orcas Island and co promotion for multiple island markets.

The development of the San Juan Islands Innovation Center is an important part of HR's work over the coming five years. The goal is to help create a business and organization incubator network on three islands that addresses food system, green/blue technology innovation, natural resources, and makerspace needs.
